 姚檀栋,中国科学院院士,美国地球物理学联合会会士,第二次青藏高原综合科学考察研究队队长,现任“第三极环境(TPE)”国际计划主席、中国青藏高原研究会理事长、中国第四纪研究会副理事长等职务。现任中国科学院青藏高原研究所研究员、名誉所长、学术委员会主任。1994年获得首届国家杰出青年科学基金资助,同年获得首届青藏高原青年科技奖和冰川冻土基础理论奖;1997年担任中国科学院冰川冻土研究所所长;2001年担任中国科学院寒区旱区环境与工程研究所所长;2003年担任中国科学院青藏高原研究所所长;2005年担任国家“973”计划首席科学家;2007年当选为中国科学院院士;2009年发起“第三极环境(TPE)”国际计划并担任联合主席;2014年担任中国科学院青藏高原地球科学卓越创新中心主任;2017年获得瑞典人类学和地理学会颁发的维加奖,是首位获奖的中国科学家和亚洲科学家;2018年担任“丝路环境”专项首席科学家。2017年姚檀栋院士作为首席科学家牵头启动了第二次青藏高原综合科学考察研究,习近平总书记专门发来贺信祝贺并作出重要指示,对推动青藏高原可持续发展、推进国家生态文明建设等方面产生重要影响。

 姚檀栋长期从事第三极环境与地球系统科学研究,在中国山地冰芯和冰川变化研究领域做出了系统性杰出贡献。他的研究揭示了西风和季风相互作用是青藏高原环境变化区域差异的主要驱动力;他组织撰写的《西藏高原环境变化科学评估》报告为西藏自治区推进2015-2030生态屏障建设规划提供了重要科学依据;姚檀栋的研究成果产出了300多篇论文,发表在包括Nature、Science、PNAS、Nature Climate Change、Review of Geophysics、Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society等在内的国际权威期刊上。在国际青藏高原研究领域,他的论文总量和总被引率排名第一。他引领的关于亚洲水塔动态变化与影响的研究成果将传统的地学观测与高新技术结合,从地球系统科学理念提出全球变暖背景下西风-季风耦合引起地表圈层的链式响应及其对人类生存环境的塑造,是国际青藏高原地球系统科学研究最新成果,被Nature和央视新闻联播等广泛推介,为第三极地区应对全球气候变化做出了贡献,入选了2018年“中科院面向世界科技前沿14项标志性重大成果”。他通过青藏高原降水稳定同位素揭示印度季风与西风相互作用的三种模态的论文是Web of Science Top 1%高被引论文。他发表在Nature Climate Change期刊上的关于冰川变化的研究被Nature期刊专题报道。Nature期刊认为姚檀栋是该领域的先行者,是“少数几个在艰苦条件下收集青藏高原过去气候历史资料的研究人员之一”。Science期刊高度评价他的研究是“解决高海拔环境变化问题领域最出色的研究活动的典范”。Nature期刊曾专题报导了他成长为国际知名冰川学家的历程。
